Always making progress The greatest triumphs often come after the biggest setbacks. The most substantial successes are often preceded by numerous failures. Why does achievement so regularly rise out of disappointment? Because disappointment can be such a powerful teacher. Others could tell you a thousand times what doesn't work, and still you might be tempted to try it. Once you've experienced disappointing results for yourself, however, you're not going to make the same mistake again. Are you hesitant to move forward because there's the possibility of a setback? Then consider that every short-term disappointment can serve to build a stronger foundation for long-term achievement. Even when you're not getting the results you want, you're making progress. Every experience, whether successful or not, can teach you how to do it better. So go ahead, step forward, and travel confidently in the direction of your dreams. For even though the setbacks and disappointments will come, you surely have nothing to fear. And, even more importantly, you have everything to gain. -- Ralph Marston
Wednesday, July 27, 2005 Living with balance It's nice to relax on a regular basis. Yet a life of nothing but relaxation would be unbearably miserable. It is extremely fulfilling and energizing to put forth great effort and to make things happen. Yet if that's all you ever do, your spirit will surely become worn away. Life is best when it is balanced. Night and day, warm and cool, wet and dry, effort and rest all benefit from each other and from the natural balance that permeates all of life. Are you plagued by frustrations, or weariness, anxiety, doubt, confusion or lack of motivation? Then the chances are very good that something in your life is out of balance. Often, the best way to get something done is to stop working on it for a while. And the best way to fully enjoy the time when you're not working is to practice discipline, diligence and commitment during the times when you are working. Your life is blessed with many different aspects. Keep them all in balance, and they will all be of much greater value to you. -- Ralph Marston
In perspective When something goes wrong, even when several things go wrong at once, there are still many more things that continue to go right for you. One of the best ways to deal with any trouble in your life is to put it into perspective. It's easy to put all of your focus on the problems because they often scream for attention. Yet no matter how intensely the problems assert themselves, you always have the power to put them in perspective. Use the magnificent power of your mind to visualize all the many treasures and blessings in your life. When compared to all the good things, the problems will not be so overwhelming. And when your mind is no longer overwhelmed with the problems of the moment, you begin to gain real power over those problems. By putting them into perspective, you put your problems at a distinct disadvantage. It's common to respond to a sudden difficulty with shock, anger, frustration, dismay and a whole host of other negative emotions. Yet
Choose to use it Success is not a matter of whether or not you can. For there is no doubt, not even in your own mind, that you can. Success is determined by whether or not you will. Achievement and fulfillment depend on what you choose to do with the opportunities and possibilities that are undeniably yours. Will you decide to avoid the best of those possibilities by hiding behind well-constructed excuses? Or will you choose to accept, to make real, and to live the full value with which your life has been blessed? It is great that you are in a position to achieve so much. Yet it is far, far better when you actually do it. You have everything you need, right now, to make this very day a day in which your life moves positively and decidedly forward. You have the capacity to dream big, wonderful, meaningful dreams and to make them real. There is no question that, one way or another, you have the ability. It's up to you to choose to use it. -- Ralph Marston
Get started If you've fallen a little behind schedule, that's no reason to get discouraged. On the contrary, it's a reason to get going. The sooner you get started, the more you'll get done. The sooner you get to work, the more value you'll create with your efforts. Do you want your work to bring maximum results? Then get moving on it right away. It may sometimes seem that the easiest choice is to slack off and delay your efforts until later. Yet by doing that, you're actually making things more difficult for yourself. To get the most done with the least amount of effort, get started on it as soon as possible. That way, instead of making time your enemy, you'll have time working on your side. This is your opportunity to fill your life with richness and your world with value. Get up, get going, and get it done. -- Ralph Marston
In between Listen to the silence in between the sounds. And you will greatly improve your understanding of all that you hear. Experience the stillness in between your thoughts. And your thoughts will have greater power, greater meaning, greater purpose. Give just as much care and attention to the relaxation between the efforts as you do to the actual efforts. And those efforts will become immensely more effective. When life gets too far out of balance, it cannot continue on that same path for very long. When the noise, the frenzy and the striving seem overwhelming, direct your focus to the silence, the stillness, the time for relaxation. Give your awareness not only to the things that demand it. Give your awareness also to the quiet, peaceful stillness from which those things arise. In between the sounds, in between the thoughts, in between the efforts, the sights, the complexities and the activities, there is much treasure to be found. In between the demands of the outer world, is the inner substance to keep you going. -- Ralph Marston
